Another successful weeked for the Steelers: 7 wins from 8
Nov 22, 2016, 3:39 pm

Saturday

U12 Girls: Blackwater Steelers 25pts Dundalk Ravens 20pts

This was a good win to a two game weekend for the 12 girls, Katie Trainor hit a game high with 17pts but they had to fight as a whole team to seal the win.

Team & Scorers: K. Trainor 17pts, A.McSkeane, G. MacConghaill, L.Lennon, A. Ward, A. Trainor, E. McDonald 4pts, O. Sherry, A. McCormack 4pts, S. Hughes, C. Gallagher and K. Fagan.

U14 Boys: Blackwater Steelers 54pts Dundalk Ravens 27pts

This turned out to be a good test for the 14 lads despite taking a 15pt lead in the 1st. Dundalk came back and made a good game of it but the better team won.

Team & Scorers: Kacper Ostrowski 14pts, Tiarnan O Rourke 13pts, Rio Corrigan 12pts, Liam Conway 5pts, Jamie Krisiulevicius 4pts, Matthew Curley 2pts, Che Treanor 2pts, Michael McMorrow 2pts, Finn Sleater, Mark Donohue, Dylan McPhillips and Donnacha O Hanlon.

U16 Boys: Blackwater Steelers 50pts Dundalk Ravens 36pts

We started slowly but picked up to lead in the 1st, built on it and established a good lead in the 2nd; we had a major wobble in the third before sealing the victory in the 4th. This was a decent performance from the lads.

Team & Scorers: Sebastian Uglis 17pts, Karl Gallagher 14pts, Ben Ryan 14pts, Gavin McPhillips 4pts, Sebastian Ostrowski 1pt, Cameron Liddle, Eoin Casey, Dylan McKenna, Ieuan Williams and Alister Stewart.

U18 Girls: Navan Cougars 45pts Blackwater Steelers 68pts

With only 6 players and 10 minute quarters, this was always going to be difficult but as long as they stayed out of foul trouble they were always going to win.

Team & Scorers: A. Mulligan 21pts, N. Hughes 20pts, A. McBride 9pts, R. Gallagher 8pts, C. Treillard 6pts & L. Nally 4pts.

Sunday

U12 Girls: Blackwater Steelers 10pts Carrick Cruisers 37pts

The girls went down heavily to a stronger Carrick team who are highly placed in the League.

Team & Scorers: K. Trainor 4pts, A. Trainor, G. MacConghaill, L. Lennon, P. Tymkow 4pts, K. Fagan, O. Sherry, H. Cunningham, S. Hughes, B. John 2pts and C. Gallagher.

U14 Girls: Blackwater Steelers 70pts Carrick Cruisers 33pts

The Steelers were too good for a gallant Carrick team winning each quarter and scoring a lot of baskets in the process.

Team & Scorers: R. Callery 17pts, H. McQuaid 17pts, B. McNally 8pts, N. O Connell 8pts, A. Ross 6pts, A. Ni Dhufaigh 4pts, K. McCarron 4pts, L. McGinnity 2pts, A. McKenna 2pts, H. Turley & F. McColgan 2pts.

U16 Girls: Blackwater Steelers 47pts Carrick Cruisers 29pts

The girls made hard work of this challenge but none the less they got the all important 3 league points.

Team & Scorers: L.O Mairtin 8pts, H. O Reilly 8pts, K. O Reilly 6pts, A. Gallagher 6pts, C. Ward 5pts, R. Kilpatrick 4pts, G. Johnson 4pts, D. Gallagher 4pts, H. McCrystal 2pts, A. Deery & H. Sherlock.

U18 Boys: Blackwater Steelers 80pts Carrick Cruisers 27pts

The last game of the day involved the yet to be beaten U 18 Boys and they won this game quite easily, Carrick played some good basketball but there was only ever going to be one winner.

Team & Scorers: K. McAdam 16pts, M. O Brien 16pts, N. Marron 13pts, R. Treanor 10pts, R. Haynes 6pts, M. McDonnell 5pts, S. McKenna 4pts, A. Sherry 4pts, C. O Hanlon 3pts, J. Hamill 3pts & D. Leonard.

Away games next week

7 of our 8 teams travel to St. Joes GAA Club in Dromiskin, Co. Louth on Sunday 27th November 2016 to play Liby Dynamites.  It will be a long day!!

5 wins from 6 for Steelers in Navan
Nov 22, 2016, 3:10 pm

Navan Cougars were the hosts for 6 of the Blackwater Steeler teams at the weekend but they weren’t strong enough to really challenge the Monaghan lads. Our U14 Girls also won well but a very under strength U16 Girls team went down to the Navan girls.

Saturday

U12 Boys: Navan Cougars 5pts Blackwater Steelers 22pts

The 12 boys started off slowly enough but eventually brushed away the Cougars challenge with relative ease. These lads are improving with every game.

Team & Scorers: J McCrystal 2pts, J. Wright 10pts, J. Lynch, M. Corrigan 2pts, A. Walsh, J. Curley 2pts, D. O Connallain 2pts, R. McArdle, E. McCaffrey 2pts & R. McMahon 2pts.

U16 Boys: Navan Cougars 18pts Blackwater Steelers 68pts

Unfortunately this was not much of a challenge for the Steeler lads as they strolled to victory. There was some good team play during the game and the shooting was quite good with the 3pt shooting improving with every game.

Team & Scorers: B. Ryan 21pts, K. Gallagher 11pts, L. Coyle 8pts, L. O Rourke 8pts, C. Liddle 7pts, S. Uglis 4pts, G. McPhillips 3pts, R. Murphy 2pts, E. Casey 2pts, C. McKenna 2pts, D. McKenna & S. Ostrowski.

U18 Boys: Navan Cougars 18pts Blackwater Steelers 67pts

This was a similar game to the U 16 one with the Steelers winning without breaking a sweat, Navan just aren’t at the level one would expect. The Steelers will learn nothing from this encounter.

Team & Scorers: Killian McAdam 17pts, Andrew O Connor 10pts, Niall Marron 10pts, Cian Fitzgerald 10pts, Ryan Treanor 7pts, Aaron Sherry 6pts, Cormac O Hanlon 4pts, Michael O Brien 3pts & Donal Leonard.

Sunday

U14 Girls: Navan Cougars 35pts Blackwater Steelers 53pts

This was a good performance and a well deserved win from the Girls. Rachel Callery top scored with 21pts as time and again she drove directly to the basket, there were also strong performances from Ava Ross, Kayla McCarron and Alex McKenna. The girls won the first 3 quarters and only succumbed in the last when the game was over.

Team & Scorers: R. Callery 21pts, A. McKenna 10pts, A. Ross 8pts, K. McCarron 6pts, E. McColgan 4pts, H. McQuaid 2pts, H. Turley 2pts, K. Trainor, L. McGinnity, P.Tymkow & N. O Connell.

U14 Boys: Navan Cougars 7pts Blackwater Steelers 38pts

The U 14 Steelers boy’s 100% record continued with another resounding win over the Cougars. Although they never really got into their full stride the Steelers were too good for their hosts winning all four quarters easily.

Team & Scorers: Rio Corrigan 11pts, Jamie Krisiulevicius 9pts, Tiarnan O Rourke 8pts, Kacper Ostrowski 4pts, Liam Conway 2pts, Finn Sleator 2pts, Donnacha O Hanlon 2pts, Gary Treanor, Enri Shiels, Mark Donahue, Dylan McPhillips & Conal Harpin.

U16 Girls: Navan Cougars 52pts Blackwater Steelers 43pts

Unfortunately the U 16 Girls failed to complete the set and went down to a decent Navan team. The Steelers were missing quite a few strong players due to injury and other commitments, with games nearly every weekend this league will test all but the very committed players. A number of the U 14s stepped up to fill in and did extremely well.

Team & Scorers: A. Ni Ghallchoir 18pts, H. O Reilly 14pts, G. Johnson 6pts, H. McCrystal 2pts, R. Callery 2pts, R. Kilpatrick 1pt, K.O Reilly, D. Ni Ghallchoir, A. Ross, A. Deery & H. Turley.

Both girls and boys teams competed well finishing 3rd in their groups after winning one from their 3 games.

U16 girls too strong for the Street Warriors
Nov 15, 2016, 11:35 pm

U16 Girls:  Blackwater Steelers 68pts Streete Warriors 11pts

We had only one game over the weekend and it was an emphatic win for the home side. Our U16 girls were too strong for the visitors winning each quarter comfortably. This is a good U16 team but they have slipped a bit loosing 2 games mainly through absentees for one reason or another and will be playing catch up if they want to win the league.

Team & Scorers: Alex Mulligan 13pts, Lara O Mairtin 12pts, Hannah O Reilly 10pts, Caoimhe Ward 8pts, Aisling Ní Ghallchoir 8pts, Mollie Molloy 5pts, Helen McCrystal 4pts, Amy Deery 3pts, Riona Kilpatrick 2pts, Katie O Reilly 1pt, Gemma Johnson & Dearbhla Ni Ghallchoir.

U12 & U14 Girls:  Streete Warriors were unable to field teams for these games and they forfeited the points.

Next Weekend

On Saturday Nov 19th we have 3 home games in St Macartans College against Dundalk Ravens at U 12 Girls at 11am, U 14 Boys at 12noon and U 16 Boys at 1.15pm. Our U 18 girls travel to Navan for 3pm tip off.

On Sunday 20 November, we entertain near neighbours Carrickmacross with 4 teams playing, U 12 girls at 11am, U 14 girls at 12noon, U 16 Girls at 1.15pm and U 18 Boys at 2.30pm.

Crash Landing for the Rockets
Nov 1, 2016, 4:00 pm

Dunshaughlin Rockets crash landed in Monaghan with all four boys’ teams going down to the Blackwater Steelers on Saturday in St. Macartans College. Sunday saw the Steeler girls win two from four against the same club.

U12 Boys: Steelers 34pts Rockets 10pts

The boys picked up their third win from 5 when they downed the Rockets with an impressive performance. They took a strong lead in the first and never looked back keeping Dunshaughlin scoreless in 2 out the four quarters. This will build confidence for tougher assignments ahead.

Team & Scorers: J. McCrystal 6pts, A. Walsh, J.Wright 3pts, F.O Gallchoir 2pts, M.Corrigan, E.McCaffery 2pts, R. McArdle , J. Lynch, J. Curley, C. Murphy 9pts, O. Reilly 6pts & R. McMahon 6pts.

U14 Boys: Steelers 53pts Rockets 14pts

5 wins from 5 games and top of the league are the main stats for these young Steelers; they were quite impressive in this demolition of the Dunshaughlin Rockets. They were 34 to 4 up after two clinical quarters where all the boys were super, they eased up in the 3rd & 4th but what was most pleasing was the fact that 10 from the 12 lads all scored.

Team & Scorers: Rio Corrigan 10pts, Finn Slater 9pts, Tiarnan O Rourke 8pts, Jamie Krisiulevicius 8pts, Matthew Curley 5pts, Liam Conway 4pts, Enri Shiels 3pts, Donnacha O Hanlon 2pts, Gary Treanor 2pts, Conal Harpin 2pts, Mark Donohue & Che Treanor.

U16 Boys: Steelers 38pts Rockets 32pts

The under 16 boys were up against tougher opposition, the Dunshaughlin boys had a confident swagger having won their first two games, but this was the Steelers 5th and that little more experience told in the end. They lead 6pts- 4pts after a low scoring 1st quarter with defences on top. Karl Gallagher and Lorcan O Rourke took the game by the scruff of the neck in the 2nd and kick-started the Steelers; 4 “3 pointers” two from Karl and one each from Lorcan and Ben punched massive holes in the Rockets and built a 24- 13 lead by half time.

The first few minutes in the third would be crucial and Sebastian Uglis was on fire hitting 6 in a row. The rockets fought back but they never looked like getting in range until they hit 5pts in the last minute. The came out fighting in the last, scored the first basket and for a while the Steelers composure disappeared, a time out settled heads and we held out for the win despite losing this period 10pts to 2pts.

Team & Scorers: K. Gallagher 11pts, S. Uglis 8pts, L. O Rourke 8pts, B. Ryan 7pts, C. Liddle 2pts, G. McPhillips 2pts, E. Casey, C. McKenna, R. Murphy, A. Stewart, K. McCaffery & D. McKenna.

U18 Boys: Steelers 75pts Rockets 54pts

4th game and the 4th win for the Steeler U 18 Boys but they started the game quite lazily, a quick time out was called, Ryan Treanor came in scored 5 quick points and this got the lads into their stride. They racked up 27pts in this period and were in control of the game. A new combination of players in the second didn’t quite work and the Rockets cut the deficit to 5, with the half time score at 35 to 30.

The home side were dominant in the 3rd and stretched the lead out again, and although teamwork can be improved there were some good team scores in this period. The Steelers won the last as well without hitting many highs.

Team & Scorers: Andrew O Connor 18pts, Michael O Brien 16pts, Niall Marron 11pts, Ryan Treanor 9pts, Killian McAdam 8pts, Cian Fitzgerald 6pts, Michael McDonnell 3pts, Donal Leonard 2pts, Robert Haynes 2pts, Aaron Sherry & Cormac O Hanlon.

Sunday

U12 Girls: Steelers 15pts Rockets 24pts

The home side had a poor start with our point guard getting sick after a few minutes, this upset the girls and they fell behind in the first by 14pts to 2. The Steeler girls never recovered from this, they won the 2nd by 6pts to 2, lost the third 2 to 4 and won the last 6 to 4 but it wasn’t enough.

Team & Scorers: P. Tymkow 5pts, A. McCormack 4pts, A. McSkeane 4pts, E. Curran 2pts, H. Cunningham, K. Fagan, C. Gallagher, S. Hughes, L. Lennon, E. McDonald, O. Sherry and A. Ward.

U14 Girls: Steelers 43pts Rockets 28pts

The U. 14 girls took a commanding 18pt lead in the first, built another 18pts on in the 2nd and lead 36 to 4. The Rockets made a better fight of it in the 2nd half but they were never going to pull this back. Steelers won by 43pts to 28.

Team & Scorers: H. McQuaid 12pts, R. Callery 9pts, B. McNally 8pts, A. Ross 4pts, K. Deery 4pts, L. McGinnity 2pts, H. Turley 2pts, C. McKenna 2pts, A. NiDhufaigh, S. McKenna, K. McCarron & E. McColgan.

U16 Girls: Steelers 82pts Rockets 12pts

This was a complete mismatch; the Steeler girls were just too strong for their opponents and racked up big scores in all 4 quarters. Their workrate and finishing was superb and this will build confidence throughout.

Team & Scorers: M. Molloy 18pts, C. Ward 15pts, D. Ni Ghallchoir 10pts, A. Ni Ghallchoir 9pts, R. Kilpatrick 9pts, L. O Mairtin 6pts, H. O Reilly 6pts, A. Deery 4pts, H. Sherlock 4pts & G. Johnston.

U18 Girls: Steelers 45pts Rockets 48pts

Due to injuries this was an under strength Steelers team backed up by U 16 girls on the day. They pushed a fancied Dunshaughlin side all the way just losing out by 3pts after Morgan McKenna had picked up 5 fouls and had to go off.

Team & Scorers: Morgan Mc Kenna 16pts, Caoimhe Ward 13pts, Lara O Mairtin 8pts, Rachel Gallagher 2pts, Laura Nally 2pts, Ailbhe Rooney 2pts & Aisling Ni Ghallchoir 2pts.

Good Wins for Steeler Boys in local derby against Muckno Lakers
Oct 20, 2016, 9:56 pm

The Steelers had 3 boys’ teams travel just up the road to Castleblayney for the “local derby” against Muckno Lakers and they came away with all the bragging rights on the first day of competition. On the 2nd day Sunday it was the opposite case, the Steelers went down in all 3 girls’ games and the U12 boy’s game too.

U16 Boys:  Muckno Lakers 28pts Blackwater Steelers 34pts

This game had very contrasting styles of play; Muckno Lakers employed a tight 1-3-1 zone defence which the Steelers found difficult to break down. The Steelers used a more open half court man to man and forced the Lakers to rush their offence and turn over the ball. The main result was a low scoring dour game.

The Steelers edged both the first 2 quarters by a point and led 17- 15 at the break. The third ended even and the Steelers eventually pulled away for a much needed “W” in the last. The performance was not wonderful but a win is a win.

Team & Scorers: Ben Ryan 8pts, Sebastian Uglis 8pts, Gavin McPhillips 7pts, Lorcan O Rourke 5pts, Cameron Liddle 3pts, Dylan McKenna 2pts, Ryan Murphy 1pt, Luke Coyle, Kai McCaffery, Sebastian Ostrowski and Alister Stewart.

U14 Boys:  Muckno Lakers 14pts Blackwater Steelers 44pts

The Lakers came out of the blocks like hungry lions and put our lads under serious pressure in the first quarter but the Steelers withstood the pressure and stole the lead all be it just by the one point by quarter end.

The 2nd quarter five were superb and really pushed out the lead by 9pts to 1pt with 4 from the 5 scoring. The lads nailed the “money quarter” by 16pts to 2 and the game was over as a contest. The last period was won well too and the Steelers boys collected their 4th “W” on the trot.

Team & Scorers: Matthew Curley 10pts, Rio Corrigan 10pts, Casper Ostrowski 8pts, Tiarnan O Rourke 7pts, Liam Conway 4pts, Finn Slater 2pts, Jamie Krisiulevicius 2pts, Michael McMorrow 1pt, Mark Donohue, Dylan McPhillips, Enri Shiels and Che Treanor.

U18 Boys:  Muckno Lakers 26pts Blackwater Steelers 66pts

The contest in this game only lasted for the first quarter and despite a bright start by the home side the Steelers led by 7 at the break. The 2nd period was one-way traffic as they strode into a 30pts to 9pts lead with Michael O Brien playing a captains role in defence and Andrew O Connor in full flow at point. There were some great combination plays between the lads as they enjoyed the next two quarters; they won by 66 to 26.

Team & Scorers: Andrew O Connor 22pts, Michael O Brien 11pts, Ryan Treanor 10pts, Cian Fitzgerald 6pts, Killian McAdam 5pts, Michael McDonnell 4pts, Cormac O Hanlon 4pts, Niall Marron 2pts & Robert Haynes 2pts

Sunday U12 Girls:  Muckno Lakers 43pts Blackwater Steelers 7pts

As Lakers teams do they started aggressively and had the game won in the first quarter, they led by 17-2, the Steeler girls tried hard to get back in the game but the damage was done and the home side ran out convincing winners.

Team & Scorers: A.McSkeane 1pt, L. Lennon, E.McDonald, P. Tymkow 4pts, G. MacConghaill, A. Ward, O. Sherry, A. Trainor, B. John, S. Hughes, K. Trainor 2pts, A. McCormack.

U12 Boys:  Muckno Lakers 44pts Blackwater Steelers 19pts

Muckno would be generally considered one of the strongest teams in this U 12 league so the feeling was, it was going to be a tough game. And so it was. We started well and defended hard, limiting the opposition to a single score during the first quarter, but we couldn’t get the ball to drop.

In the second, we began to get more shots on target and managed to get some scores on the board, but a very skilful Muckno responded and slowly pulled away. During the second half of the game the battle continued and Blackwater held their own for most of the final two quarters, but Lakers still seemed to have more in reserve and crept away in the last few minutes.

This was a valiant performance from our young players, who are growing in skill and confidence with every game. They will undoubtedly develop into a strong little team, with a little more experience under their belts. Final score: Muckno 41 – Steelers 19.

Team & Scorers: A Walsh, F O Gallchóir – 2 points, R Mc Ardle, J Wright, M Corrigan, E Mc Caffery, C Murphy – 10 points, D Mulligan, J Curley, O Reilly – 7 points, R Mc Mahon, J Mc Crystal.

U16 Girls:  Muckno Lakers 56pts Blackwater Steelers 37pts

As was the pattern all day Muckno Lakers came out of the blocks in the first quarter like a whirlwind, got into a lead and built on it relentlessly, 19 - 5 in the first and 14 – 5 in the 2nd. It was only after the halftime break that Steelers showed their worth, winning the third and drawing the last. By the time the reverse fixture comes round the Steelers will be in better shape to compete.

Team & Scorers: A. Mulligan 17pts, C. Ward 11pts, M. Molloy 3pts, A. Ni Ghallchoir 2pts, R. Kilpatrick 2pts, H. McCrystal 2pts, H. Sherlock, L. O Mairtin, D.Ni Ghallchoir and A. Derry.

Muckno Lakers also won the U14 Girls game comfortably but there is no information to hand on that game.

Blackwater Steelers entertain Cavan Lakers
Oct 11, 2016, 9:07 pm

Blackwater Steelers entertained Cavan Lakers at the weekend in their first home games of the season and on the first day Saturday honours were shared with 2 wins each for the boys’ teams. On Sunday the Steeler girls secured all the points on offer.

U12 Boys:  Blackwater Steelers 17pts Cavan Lakers 26pts

This was the early game and the Cavan Laker boys seemed to catch our lads a bit off guard. We knew this team were going to present more of a challenge than we have had so far this season, but they seemed to leave us standing in the first quarter and we ended the period down 10 points to 2. In the second, the Monaghan men, again, took a little while to settle, but after a few shaky minutes, fell into their rhythm. Steelers found their defensive feet, managing to the slow the Lakers attack a little and put a few points on the board, at half time we knew we had a bit of a mountain to climb, down 18 points to 5.

In the second half of the game, Blackwater Steelers shook off the cobwebs and took to the court with renewed vigour. They stemmed the Laker attack completely in the third quarter and pulled themselves back to within a couple of points of the Cavan men. The young Steelers continued to fight valiantly to the end but Cavan Lakers came back hard in the last quarter and unfortunately, the game slipped away from us again. Cavan were victorious – 26-17. The mountain we had built for ourselves - a little too high!

Team and scorers: J. Gunn, F. O Gallcóir – 2 points, D. Mulligan, J. Wright, M. Corrigan – 2 points, J. Curley, C. Murphy – 4 points, J. Mc Crystal – 1 points, A. Walsh – 2 points, R. Mc Ardle, O. Reilly – 6 points, R. Mc Mahon.

U14 Boys:  Blackwater Steelers 40pts Cavan Lakers 25pts

The U 14 Steeler boys continued their winning ways and notched up their 3rd win of the season so far. The first quarter boys established a 10pts to 4 lead, the 2nd quarter lads built on it and the 3rd was a dominant display by the home side. Naturally the lads eased up in the last a little and the Cavan lads won this one. Overall this was a strong team performance with notable displays from our more experienced guys with good backup from the younger lads.

Team & Scorers: Tiarnan O Rourke 11pts, Rio Corrigan 10pts, Liam Conway 9pts, Jamie Krisiulevicius 6pts, Mark Donohue 2pts, Conal Harpin 2pts, Gary Treanor, Che Treanor, Donnacha O Hanlon, Enri Shiels, Matthew Curley & Dylan McPhillips.

U16 Boys:  Blackwater Steelers 62pts Cavan Lakers 76pts

Most people thought this was the game of the day; it certainly was one of the most exiting games played in St. Macartans for a long time. Both teams went at it hammer and tongue from the off with the lead switching violently from quarter to quarter, this was a real rollercoaster. Despite the loss this was a really good performance by the Steeler boys.

The Steelers started brilliantly racking up a 10pts to 2pt lead with Ben Ryan and Gavin McPhillips combining well, but Cavan pressed from the start and the pressure eventually told as they got back into the game, they led 22-16 by the break.

The Steelers reacted in the 2nd with Karl Gallagher, Sebastian Uglis and Lorcan O Rourke driving the home side back into the lead, the quarter score was 22 to 7 and the home side led by 38pts to 29pts at halftime.

The Lakers turned the tables again with D. Rowley running the show; they capitalised on a little Steelers indiscipline and took back the lead. Facing this intense pressure the Steelers needed to stick to the plan but a little too much individualism caused cracks. The score going into the last had Lakers ahead by 51pts to 47pts.

The lead changed hands again during the 4th but the Lakers were edging it. With a minute and a half to go Steelers pressed to try and ruffle the Cavan side but they were good enough to see it out winning by 70pts to 62pts.

Team & Scorers: Gavin McPhillips 16pts, Ben Ryan 14pts, Lorcan O Rourke 13pts, Karl Gallagher 11pts, Sebastian Uglis 8pts, Alister Stewart, Cameron Liddle, Dylan McKenna, Ieuan Williams, Kai McCaffrey, Luke Coyle & Ryan Murphy.

U18 Boys:  Blackwater Steelers 86pts Cavan Lakers 59pts

This may look like a resounding victory, it was far from that. Cavan Lakers employing the full court press give the home side loads of trouble and a lot of that trouble was self inflicted. The first was close as both teams sussed each other out; it ended 19-17 to the home team. The Steelers stretched that narrow lead out winning the 2nd by 26pts to 11pts and the game should have been set up for a comfortable win but the boys failed to build on it.

Poor defence in the third & fourth by the Steelers, (they were totally out rebounded by the Lakers) left the game in the balance. The difference was always around 20 pts but the combination of the Lakers press, poor rebounding and wrong options by the home side left for an uncomfortable afternoon. However the Steelers did win the game and the 3pts is the most important thing.

Team & Scorers: Michael O Brien 17pts, Killian McAdam 16pts, Ryan Treanor 14pts, Andrew O Connor 12pts, Robert Haynes 11pts, Michael McDonnell 9pts,Cian Fitzpatrick 6pts, Cormac O Hanlon 2pts, Sean Conway, Jason Hamill, Donal Leonard and  Aaron Sherry.
Sunday

U12 Girls:  Blackwater Steelers 15pts Cavan Lakers 17pts

The Steelers still win the points as Cavan had only 7 players where 10 are required. This was a good run out for the girls.

Team & Scorers: K. Treanor 6pts, L. Lennon, A. McSkeane, E. McDonald 4pts, O. Sherry, G. MacConghaill, A. McCormack 1pt, A. Ward, S. Hughes, B. John, H. Cunningham and P. Tymhow 4pts.

U14 Girls:  Blackwater Steelers 45pts Cavan Lakers 41pts

Again the Cavan girls were short on numbers but they still put it up to the Steelers in a very game. There was a period in the last quarter where Cavan took the lead but the Steelers showed great character to come back and get the win.

Team & Scorers: Hannah Turley 4pts, Aine Ni Dhufaigh 2pts, Ava Ross 6pts, Niamh O Connell 3pts, Rachel Callery 12pts, Hollie McQuaid 7pts, Aine McQuaid 2pts, Kayla McCarron, Louise McGinnity 2pts, Eimear McColgan 1pt, Cathy McKenny 4pts and Alex McKenna 2pts.

U16 Girls:  Blackwater Steelers 88pts Cavan Lakers 27pts

This was a complete mismatch but the Steeler girls played well, did what they had to do and won easily.

Team & Scorers: H. Sherlock 5pts, A. Ni Ghallchoir 18pts, L.Mairtin18pts, H. O Reilly, H. Turley, H. McCrystal 18pts, R. Kilpatrick 20pts & D. Ni Ghallchoir 9pts.

U14 Boys: Tara Druids 12pts Blackwater Steelers 30pts
Oct 4, 2016, 11:19 pm

The U 14 were up next and they give a good account of themselves against limited opposition. They started well with a couple of nice shots from Che Treanor and this settled them down into a nice rhythm. The defence was organised and the Steelers were on the front foot, baskets from Kasper, Michael and Tiarnan left them with an 11-2 lead. The 2nd quarter was strong too and the Steelers drove on, scores from Rio, Liam and Matthew pushed the lead to a commanding 23pts to 11pts at half-time.

Tara Druids got themselves better organised in the 2nd half and restricted the Steelers scoring, that coupled with a little dip in focus from the Monaghan side made it an even contest. The Steelers defence was still very good so there was no danger of loosing the game and they improved again in the fourth quarter. The final score was 12pts – 30pts.
