Blackwater Steelers play host to Neighbours
Jan 30, 2017, 11:11 pm

While all the main basketball action was focused in the National Basketball Arena in Dublin with the National Finals being played over the course of the weekend, the local action was taking place in St. Macartans College where Castleblayey rivals Muckno Lakers were the visitors in NEBB league.

Saturday 28 January 2017

U14 Girls:  Blackwater Steelers 28pts Muckno Lakers 34pts
This was certainly a game of two halves, with the Steelers leading by 26pts to 9pts, the game should have been wrapped up but Muckno powered back in the third with 14 unanswered points and then finished the job with a dominant display in the last.

The home side were excellent in the first leading by double figures 10pts to 5pts with Rachel Callery dominant. The Steelers continued the push in the 2nd playing some wonderful basketball with Holly McQuaid, Brid McNally and Niamh O Connell at the heart of everything and they led by 26pts to 9pts. Muckno Lakers came out in the 3rd, took a few scores and the Steelers went to pieces, the visitors found new confidence and scored 25pts over the 2 quarters to win the game. The Steelers will be kicking themselves as they were in a great position to end Muckno’s unbeaten run this season.

Team & Scorers: Holly McQuaid 8pts, Niamh O Connell 6pts, Brid McNally 4pts, Rachel Callery 4pts, Ava Ross 2pts, Hannah Turley 2pts, Cathy McKenna 2pts, Kayla McCarron, Katie Deery, Louise McGinity and Alex McKenna.

U14 Boys: Blackwater Steelers 46pts Muckno Lakers 16pts
There was no heartbreak for the U 14 Boys; this was a dominant show of strength from the Steeler boys winning all 4 quarters comfortably. Baskets from Tiarnan, Che and Conal had the home side up 8pts to 2pts in the first. The 2nd quarter lads stretched the lead to 20pts to 6pts with Rio, Liam and Matthew all contributing to the scoreboard.

The 3rd & 4th were a carbon copy of the previous quarters with 8pt leads achieved in both. The lads all played well and looked very assured on the court.

Team & Scorers: Rio Corrigan 14pts, Tiarnan O Rourke 10pts, Kacper Ostrowski 10pts, Liam Conway 4pts, Che Treanor 4pts, Matthew Curley 2pts, Conal Harpin 2pts, Finn Selater, Michael McMorrow, Dylan McPhillips, Jamie Krisiulevicius and Mark Donohue.

U12 Boys:  Blackwater Steelers 12pts Muckno Lakers 24pts
The U12 boys were last up to meet Muckno Lakers. The game got off to a slow start with both teams sizing the other up. A very low scoring first half finished with Muckno up 11 points to 6, leaving Steelers with a lot to do. In the third quarter the home team picked up the pace a little but found it difficult to get scores on the board while Muckno gradually pulled away in the fourth to win 23 points to 10.

Team and scorers: J Mc Crystal, A Walsh, J Wright - 2 points, F O Gallchoir - 6 points, M Corrigan, E Mc Caffrey - 2 points, C Murphy, R Mc Ardle, R Mc Mahon, J Curley, O Reilly, J Lynch.

Sunday 29th January 2017

U12 Girls:  Blackwater Steelers 11pts Muckno Lakers 25pts
In the first game on Sunday our youngest Steeler team succumbed to a bolder, try anything Lakers team. These Castleblayey girls are certainly not shy of the basket and it paid off, they shoot on sight in a refreshing direct approach. They were certainly better than our young Steelers on the day.

Team & Scorers: E. Curran 3pts, C.Gallagher, G. MacConghaille 2pts, A. McShane 1pt, P.Tympow, B. John 3pts, O. Sherry, A. Ward, H. Cunningham, L. Lennon, P. Trainor 2pts & A. Trainor.

U16 Boys:  Blackwater Steelers 49pts Muckno Lakers 47pts
The Steelers knew this would be a tight game; with veteran Coach Gerry Smyth at the Muckno helm bringing all his vast experience to a bunch of very strong lads, it was always going to be a battle.

The home side won the first by 8pts to 5pts in a defence dominated quarter with our inside players Sebb & Gavin scoring from rebounds. Muckno Lakers took over in the 2nd with Robbie Hanratty driving to the boards for 10pts of the teams 19pts. The Steelers scored 11pts but struggled against Lakers 1-3-1 zone defence but there was still only 5pts between the teams.

The Steelers went out in the third and pressed full court, the home side sensed a change in momentum and although the Lakers handled it well enough for the most part, some cracks were appearing, this period ended 14 pts each but Karl Gallagher was having more and more of an effect on the game.

A huge 3 from Lorcan set the tone in the last as the Steelers pressure paid off, a couple of scores from turnovers levelled the score and eventually the home side took the lead with Karl hitting 5 of them. We were now defending better too and Muckno struggled to cope. This was a hard earned win that gets the Steelers back on track after defeat to Cavan Lakers last week.

Team & Scorers: Karl Gallagher 15pts, Sebastian Uglis 11pts, Lorcan O Rourke 8pts, Gavin McPhillips 8pts, Conor McKenna 4ts, Cameron Liddle 3pts, Eoin Casey, Ieuan Williams, Ryan Murphy, Alister Stewart, Ben Ryan & Dylan McKenna.

Steelers short trip to Cavan Lakers
Jan 7, 2017, 2:03 pm

Blackwater Steelers brought 4 boys and 2 girl’s teams over to St Pats College, Cavan at the weekend to take on the improving Lakers. The U12 girls lost in their League game but the U14 girls shared their friendly match and didn’t bother with extra time. The U12 boys went down to a very strong side but our U14 boys preserved their unbeaten record. The 16s were beaten by the better side on the day but the 18’s were convincing winners.

U12 Boys: Cavan Lakers 61pts Blackwater Steelers 15pts

The U12 boys were put to the sword by a very strong U12 boys in a one sided match in St Pats. The Cavan boys were bigger and stronger and the Steeler boys did not play well on the day.

Team & Scorers: J Mc Crystal - 2 pts, F O Gallchoir - 3 pts, J Wright, D Mulligan, M Corrigan, A Walsh, C Murphy - 2 pts, D O Connallain, R Mc Mahon - 2 pts, J Curley, O Reilly - 4 points, J Gunn - 2 pts.

U14 Boys: Cavan Lakers 12pts Blackwater Steelers 25pts

The Steelers team top the league after an 11 games unbeaten so there was nothing surer than the Cavan Lakers pulling out all the stops to beat them and they did ask some questions of the boys but by the end of the game they were all answered correctly by the Monaghan lads.

The first two quarters were low scoring with both defences on top, the Cavan defence were vastly improved and stopped the Steelers getting into a rhythm and it was really the third before the scores started to flow. With Kacper & Rio working extremely hard down low and Liam and Tiarnan carrying the bulk of the threat, gaps opened in the Lakers defence and the Steelers took a decent lead. The Monaghan side secured the victory in the last with a 6pts to nil score.

Team & Scorers: Rio Corrigan 9pts, Tiarnan O Rourke 5pts, Kacper Ostrowski 5pts, Jamie Krisiulevius, Liam Conway 2pts, Gary Treanor, Matthew Curley, Donnacha O Hanlon, Conal Harpin, Michael McMorrow & Marc Donohue.

U16 Boys: Cavan Lakers 47pts Blackwater Steelers 31pts

Both teams knew this game could be decisive in terms of winning the league, so both teams approached it accordingly and as top of the table clashes go there was nothing between the two sides at the end of an exhilarating first with the score at 11pts each.

The home side upped their game in the second; employing a press then quickly retreating to a zone they forced the Steelers into making poor decisions all over the court. The Steeler lads came up short and Cavan broke the game to lead by 10pts. The third was pretty even but crucially the Monaghan side made no real inroads into that lead but there was still only 9 between them going into the last.

The lack of energy and belief evident in the previous quarters came to the surface in the last as frustration took over giving Cavan an easy ride to victory.

Team & Scorers: Conor McKenna 10pts, Gavin McPhillips 9pts, Lorcan O Rourke 6pts, Ben Ryan 4pts, Karl Gallagher 2pts, Cameron Liddle, Alister Stewart, Sebastian Uglis, Dylan McKenna, Kai McCaffrey, Sebastian Ostrowski and Luke Coyle.

U18 Boys: Cavan Lakers 50pts Blackwater Steelers 67pts

The U18 Steeler boys also hold an unbeaten record so far this season and that continued on Sunday in St. Pats Cavan. The first quarter was the decisive one with the Monaghan side blitzing Cavan by 26pts to 7pts, all 5 lads were super and the game was effectively won. The lads dropped the pace a couple of notches for the rest, they won the 2nd by 2pts, the 3rd by 3pts and dropped the last by 7 but the game was in the bag.

Team & Scorers: Andrew O Connor 19pts, Michael O Brien 14pts, Ryan Treanor 13pts, Killian McAdam 10pts, Michael McDonnell 5pts, Robert Haynes 5pts, Shane McKenna 1pt, Jason Hamill, Donal Leonard, Sean Conway & Cormac O Hanlon.

Amy & Morgan make Irish Panel
Dec 19, 2016, 1:13 pm

Amy MulliganMorgan McKenna

Congratulations to Blackwater Steelers pair Amy Mulligan and Morgan McKenna who have just been selected to the Ireland U 17 Development Panel. The club is extremely proud of these two girls who have been playing basketball with us from primary school age.

Both girls have starred on every team they have been on since they started at U 12 level picking up many awards from they began. They have won BNI League Titles at U 14 & U 16 levels; they have both represented their schools St Louis Convent & Colaiste Oiriall at all levels and won a number of North East Regional Titles. They have both been selected for the North East Schools Regional Teams that have competed nationally. Both girls are strong, elegant players with an eye for the hoop and it’s no surprise to us in the club that they have been selected. All your coaches who have worked with you over the years are very proud of you. Good luck girls from all at Blackwater Steelers.

Steeler Boys Win all 4 Games
Dec 19, 2016, 1:13 pm

On the last day of 2016 fixtures in the NEBB league before the Christmas break, the Steelers were successful in all 4 games against our Westmeath visitors Streete Warriors. The U14 Boys maintained their 100% record with their 11th win of the season, as did the U18 boys who chalked up their 8th win. The U12 & U16 boys had excellent wins too.

U16 Boys:  Blackwater Steelers 68pts Streete Warriors 29pts

The 16s started the day rolling with an excellent win after a slow start, maybe it was the festive season but this game was full of incident. The 1st quarter ended with a half court buzzer beater from Ben Ryan that nearly lifted the roof; then Gavin McPhillips’ “coast to coast two” had the bench cheering but Kai Caffrey’s “ankle breaker” had the hall in raptures and in between all this there was some good teamwork going on. The boys won all 4 quarters on the back of a game high 28 pts from Sebb Uglis and a brilliant marking job by Lorcan O Rourke on Streete’s dangerous number 9. Well done boys and Happy Christmas.

Team & Scorers: Sebb Uglis 28pts, Karl Gallagher 11pts, Gavin McPhillips 8pts, Cameron Liddle 5pts, Alister Stewart 5pts, Dylan McKenna 4pts, Ben Ryan 3pts, Lorcan O Rourke 2pts, Luke Coyle 2pts, Eoin Casey & Kai McCaffrey.

U14 Boys: Blackwater Steelers 46pts Streete Warriors 27pts

This might not have been as fluid a performance as other games as we were a little understrength but credit must go to the lads for their 11th win of the season and their 100% win ratio so far. Rio Corrigan’s 22pts (a substantial tally for a U 14 game) was the highlight of the day as we won every quarter in the match. Well done lads & Happy Christmas.

Team & Scorers: Rio Corrigan 22pts, Tiarnan O Rourke 11pts, Che Treanor 4pts, Michael McMorrow 3pts, Finn Slater 2pts, Conal Harpin 2pts, Matthew Curley 2pts, Donnacha O Hanlon, Mark Donohue, Dylan McPhillips & Enri Shiels.

U12 Boys: Blackwater Steelers 33pts Streete Warriors 14pts

This was a comprehensive win for Sean O Mairtin’s U 12 side; they started off well winning the first by 10pts to 2pt whereas the 2nd was a little more competitive but they took complete control of the game in the third winning it by 11pts to zero. The boys eased up a little in the last knowing the game was done and dusted. Well done lads & Happy Christmas.

Team & Scorers: C. Murphy 12pts, F. Magee 4pts, R. McMahon 4pts, F. O Gallchoir 3pts, J. Gunn 2pts, A. Walsh 2pts, D. Mulligan 2pts, J. Wright 2pts, J. Lynch, O. Reilly, R. McArdle & E. McCaffrey.

U18 Boys: Blackwater Steelers 89pts Streete Warriors 40pts

The Steeler U 18 boys continued their 100% win ratio with this strong performance against Streete. 36pts from the impressive Andrew O Connor and another 23pts from Killian McAdam propelled the Steelers past the challenge of Streete. Overall the defence was very good and some of our offensive moves worked a treat. Well done men & Happy Christmas.

Team & Scorers: Andrew O Connor 36pts, Killian McAdam 23pts, Michael O Brien 14pts, Aaron Sherry 6pts, Cormac O Hanlon 6pts, Michael McDonnell 2pts, Jason Hamill 2pts, Donal Leonard, Ryan Treanor & Robert Haynes.

Appreciation

Blackwater Steelers would like to extend Seasons Greetings to all connected with the club and just a little note of thanks to all parents who have rowed in to help us with loads of jobs this season; we really do appreciate all the help.

Blackwater Steelers Win all 4 Games
Dec 13, 2016, 4:02 pm

The Blackwater Steelers had 4 games over the course of the weekend and won all 4, our U12 & U14 boys travelled to Cavan on Saturday to take on the Cavan Lakers 2nd teams and they won both, the U12 impressing as they ended the Cavan teams unbeaten run. On Sunday evening the U16 & U18 girls hosted the East Cavan Eagles, the U16 game was a real thriller going into overtime with the home side coming out with a 1pt victory. The U18s won well.

Saturday

U14 Boys: Cavan Laker Cubs 15pts Blackwater Steelers 52pts

This match was always going to be a big ask for the home team to overturn the League Leaders and stop this 10 game unbeaten run and that’s the way it turned out. Once the Steelers settled down and got the first scores, they never looked back; they won all 4 quarters with some good individual performance, the team performance was a little under par.

Team & Scorers: Rio Corrigan 16pts, Jamie Krisiulevicius 10pts, Tiarnan O Rourke 8pts, Liam Conway 6pts, Matthew Curley 6pts, Kacper Ostrowski 6pts, Che Treanor, Donnacha O Hanlon, Michael McMorrow, Gary Treanor, Conal Harpin and Dylan McPhillips.

U12 Boys: Cavan Laker Cubs 6pts Blackwater Steelers 20pts

This Cavan Side were unbeaten coming into this game, so with both teams working hard in defence from the off, it was obvious this wasn’t going to be a high scoring game. The Steelers led by a narrow 6pts to 4 at the end of the 1st and won the 2nd 5pts to 2. The Monaghan side kept Lakers scoreless in the 3rd winning this period 4-0 and despite a full court press by the home side won the last by 5pts – 2.

Team & Scorers: J.McCrystal, J. Wright 5pts, R. McArdle, F.O Gallchoir 2pts, M. Corrigan 2pts, E.McCaffery, C. Murphy 2pts, J. Curley, R.McMahon 2pts, J. Lynch-2pts, O.Reilly 5pts & A. Walsh

Sunday

U16 Girls:  Blackwater Steelers 56pts East Cavan Eagles 55pts aet

This game lived up to its billing, a close contest with two U 16 international panellists (current and past) on each team, this went down to the wire and then some. Credit has to go to both sets of girls who served up a cracking match in front of a great crowd.  The Steelers took a narrow two point lead in the first with Lara O Mairtin taking some fine scores. Alex Mulligan rattled up 8pts at the start of the 2nd but worryingly picked up fouls too, but they held a two point lead at the break.

Ciara Tolan was increasingly hard to stop as she pushed the Eagles ahead but Caoimhe Ward’s spirit and fight kept the Steelers in touch, Alex came on to grab a basket and then hit a massive 3 to leave just 1pt between the sides. Into the 4th and Alex hit 6pts before fouling out, Ciara Tolan kept the Eagles out in front as time etched away but it was Hannah O Reilly who became the hero from the free shot line putting the Steelers ahead by 1 with about 20secs left, this was just enough time for Eagles to send the game into overtime.

The Steeler girls got the better of overtime by just 3pts to 2pts in the 3 minutes allotted although the Eagles will be kicking themselves over missed chances. Ciara Tolan ended with a match high of 33pts but still ended up on the loosing side, that doesn’t happen too often;

Team & Scorers: Alex Mulligan 19pts, Lara O Mairtin 13pts, Hannah O Reilly 9pts, Caoimhe Ward 8pts, Gemma Johnson 5pts, Mollie Molloy 2pts, Amy Deery, Helen McCrystal, Hannah Sherlock, D. Ni Ghallchoir & Rhona Kilpatrick.

U18 Girls: Blackwater Steelers 82pts East Cavan Eagles 46pts

This game was over as a contest after the first quarter; the Steelers ran up a big score in this period and never looked back afterwards.

Team & Scorers: Morgan McKenna 20pts, Amy Mulligan 20pts, Alex Mulligan 15pts, Allison McBride 8pts, Laura Nally 7pts, Caoimhe Ward 4pts, Lara O Mairtin 4pts, Rachel Gallagher 2pts & Amy Rooney.

U12 Boys: Blackwater Steelers 16pts East Cavan Eagles 9pts

This was a great game throughout! It was a see-saw battle with ultimately the Steeler boys emerging as worthy victors. In League terms it was an important victory keeping a good few points between the top 4 teams and the rest.

Team & Scorers: O. Reilly 4pts, C Murphy 2pts, J Curley 2pts, J. McCrystal 2pts, E Mc Caffrey 2pts, F. O’Gallchoir 2pts, M. Corrigan 2pts, A Walsh, D Mulligan, J Gunn, D O’ Connallain and J. Lynch.

Complete Whitewash for Blackwater Steelers
Nov 29, 2016, 10:56 pm

Blackwater Steelers travelled to Dromiskin, Co. Louth with 7 teams on Sunday to take on Libby Dynamites, by the day’s end the Monaghan side had a complete white wash of victories.

U12 Girls: Libby 5pts Blackwater Steelers 6pts

Picture the scene, loud music blaring, packed venue with parents supporting vociferously throughout, the atmosphere rocking, you could be in the National Basketball Arena, last 30 seconds and Steelers are 1 point up, but Libby have 2 free shots, panic on the Steelers bench that Libby would score, but they are missed and Steelers win by 6pts- 5pts and the girls go wild. “Sure you couldn’t buy this”

Team & Scorers: K. Trainor, A. Trainor, H. Cunningham, A. McSkeane, K. Fagan, E. Curran 2pts, P. Tymkow, S. Hughes, B. John 2pts, A. McCormack, C. Gallagher 2pts, L. Lennon.

U12 Boys: Libby 17pts Blackwater Steelers 39pts

This was a comfortable win for the Steeler boys once they got their noses in front, they controlled the first 3 quarters before easing off a little in the 4th.

Team & Scorers: J. McCrystal 4pts, J. Wright 6pts, A. Walsh 2pts, D. Mulligan, M. Corrigan 2pts, D. O Connallain 4pts, C. Murphy 10pts, F. Magee, R. McMahon, J. Curley, O. Reilly 7pts, R. McCaffrey 4pts.

U14 Boys: Libby 10pts Blackwater Steelers 51pts

The lads have hit 50pts and over in their last few games but the only difference today was that they did not play all that brilliantly. The Steelers were just too strong for their opposition.

Team & Scorers: T. O Rourke 18pts, R. Corrigan 18pts, M. Curley 6pts, L. Conway 4pts, F. Slater 2pts, C. Treanor 2pts, M. McMorrow 1pt, K. Ostrowski, D. O Hanlon, M. Donohue, G. Treanor & E. Shiels.

U16 Boys: Libby 14pts Blackwater Steelers 92pts

This may be the highest score achieved in this U 16 league so far but it was done using all 12 players evenly with a great spread of scores, unfortunately Libby are just not at this level.

This game was won in the 3rd when the Steelers went on a 14 to 1pt run which blew Libby’s confidence and they never really recovered.

Team & Scorers: Alex Mulligan 12pts, Amy Mulligan 9pts, M. McKenna 8pts, N. Hughes 4pts, A. McBride 3pts, L. O Mairtin 2pts, R. Gallagher, L. Nally & C. Ward.
